For Healthy Jaw Development

At Bortnem Orthodontics, Dr. Bortnem sometimes uses a device known as a Rapid Palatal Expander (RPE) to help your child’s teeth and jaw develop beautifully and on track.

In some children, the is the best way to address malocclusions or bad bites, includes gently widening the upper jaw.  RPE treatment is particularly effective in young children and preteens, taking advantage of the natural growth processes for optimal results.

Understanding the Expansion Process

Your child’s Rapid Palatal Expander works by applying gradual pressure to the palatal bones, effectively widening the upper jaw. This is done through the use of a special key which is used to turn the expander incrementally.

Generally, a parent or sometimes the patient themselves will adjust the expander, usually once per day or every other day, depending on Dr. Bortnem’s instruction.

Using the Key

The process involves a series of turns, usually totaling between 20 and 32, over a period that can extend up to four weeks. Each turn slightly separates the two halves of the upper jaw, which are more malleable in children and young adolescents, allowing for easier and more stable expansion.

The End Result

The goal at the end of the expansion phase is to have the upper teeth sitting comfortably outside of the lower teeth, signifying a successful adjustment and improved oral structure. This strategic intervention not only enhances the appearance but also contributes significantly to the functional health of your child's mouth.

The Benefits of Using a Rapid Palatal Expander

The use of an RPE at Bortnem Orthodontics provides several key benefits:

A Healthy Bite

By expanding the upper jaw, the RPE helps ensure that the upper teeth fit more comfortably over the lower teeth, promoting a more natural bite alignment and improving overall oral function.

Stops Issues Before
They Start

Early intervention with an RPE can prevent more complex orthodontic problems later in life, potentially reducing the need for more invasive treatments such as tooth extractions or surgery.

A Beautiful Smile

As the jaw widens, spacing issues can be corrected, and the smile becomes broader and more aesthetically pleasing.
